THOUSANDS of Ibadan residents have been rendered homeless and an unspecified number of persons reportedly killed after a heavy downpour that lasted several hours on Friday.
The rain, which began at about past 5pm in the evening, swept away people houses, cars and motorcycles, among others.
An eyewitness described how, at the Apete Bridge, six persons were washed away, as they attempted to cross.
The bodies, as at the time of filing this report, have not been recovered.www.naijapaymentonline.com
Residents of Ajibode, Orogun, Apete, Bodija, Ojoo, Gbowo, Sango and its environs, who were away from their homes when the rain started, could not return.
The floodwaters swept away electric poles, which, in turn, became lifesavers to many who held on to them and swam to safety.
The University of Ibadan was not spared, as some of its lecture halls were overtaken by water. Students of the institution who reside around Agbowo, Ajibode, Orogun and Apete were taken hostage by the waters, away from their hostels.
When The Guardian visited Apete, Agbowo, Orogun and Ajibode, people were seen wailing, as they took stock of damages. About 20 persons have been reported missing in the affected areas.
At Agbowo, the bodies of unidentified persons from unknown destinations were recovered. The story was the same at the Orogun area of Ibadan.Speaking to The Guardian, an elderly man who fought back tears, lamented: “He was a bricklayer. I just wanted him to assist me today. What do I tell the parents when I get back home? How do I explain that the boy I took to work has been swept away by the flood?” www.naijapaymentonline.com
