‘We didn’t know of any election until we saw Fashola, Tinubu campaigning on TV’ - lagosians

The usual electioneering that precedes voting in Lagos State was absent in the Ojodu area of Lagos State on Friday, the eve of the local government election.

Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed that election posters, which usually defaced every available space during campaigns, were in short supply.
Except at the Grammar School area, where a few posters were displayed, the entire area was devoid of election posters.
Most of the residents interviewed by our correspondent expressed indifference towards the exercise, complaining that there was nothing much to show as performance by those they voted for at the local level three years ago.
A resident, Akintoye Thompson, told our correspondent on Aina Street that he was only aware of the election when he watched Governor Babatunde Fashola on the television addressing a rally during the week.

He said, "I was not aware of any election coming up until I saw (Bola) Tinubu and (Governor Babatunde) Fashola asking Lagosians to vote for the Action Congress of Nigeria chairmanship and councillorship candidates. I don’t know what those we voted three years ago did for us to deserve our votes again."
At the Grammar School area, where campaign posters were seen, our correspondent observed that those pasted belonged to the candidates of the ACN.
A respondent selling fruits on Olaleke Taiwo Street told our correspondent that the opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party, were only being prudent with their resources.
She said, "Maybe the other parties don’t want to waste money printing posters that may not serve any purpose at the end of the day. Posters of the ACN are very few too; maybe they are aware that Lagosians don’t take the local government election seriously because they are not doing anything."
It was observed that nobody made any effort to carry out any palliative repair work on the bad roads within the LG as a way of wooing voters.
But a resident told SATURDAY PUNCH that it might be because the former chairman of the local government was no longer around to use resources at his disposal to carry out repair works on the bad roads.
The former chairman, Mr. Abiodun Faleke, is now a member of the House of Representatives in Abuja.
He relinquished the post to contest a seat at the federal legislature last April. He represents Ikeja constituency.
