Dismissed constable impersonates IGP

A dismissed police constable has been arrested for impersonating former Inspector General of Police and two Deputy Inspectors General of Police. The suspect, Charles Uzoma, 32, claimed he had impersonated former Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro, former DIG, Efuntayo and former DIG, Adedayo Adeoye.

Uzoma said he used the names of the top police officers to defraud his unsuspecting victims. The suspect, who alleged that he frisked a member of the Delta House of Assembly of N50, 000, disclosed he had made over N700, 000 through such dubious means.

He alleged that the special assistant to the lawmaker gave out four numbers belonging to the legislator. He paid the Special Assistant N5, 000 for divulging the information. He claimed to have been dismissed from the force after he attended his uncle’s burial three years ago.

Uzoma, who was paraded before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, yesterday by the State Police spokesman, Samuel Jinadu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, disclosed that he lived in Maraba area of Abuja, where he was also arrested. He alleged that two of his victims just paid N50, 000 and N150, 000 respectively. He also said the personal assistants and special assistants to the lawmakers usually gave out the numbers of their bosses for a fee.

According to the suspect, he got the number of the former IGP through a man he identified as ASP Abubakar attached to the Commissioner of Police in charge of MOPOL Squadron, in Abuja. Alleging that among his victims were Commander of Mobile Police Force Squadron 11, Calabar, member of House of Assembly Delta State, Adamson, he disclosed that he usually sent text messages that he had health problem and would like to travel abroad for medical check-up and they would respond by paying money into his former girlfriend’s account, whose name is Catherine.

Uzoma alleged he bought Adamson’s numbers from his personal assistant, identified as Ifeanyi (other names withheld) for the sum of N5, 000 adding that in some cases, he paid up to N7, 000. He claimed that he regretted his action and was ashamed of himself.
