Abia gang rape: Police arrest 2 suspects

ABIA State Police Command, Saturday,  said  it has arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a girl by five young men  said  to be students of Abia State University, Uturu.
The video of the incident had  gone viral on internet and was followed by widespread outrage,  as the university authorities and Abia  State government have disowned the alleged rape.
They denied the incident took place in the university and that the victim and the rapists are not from the university.

The state police commissioner, Mr. Bala Hassan confirmed that two suspects have been arrested by his men.
Hassan, who spoke in a telephone interview, did not say if the suspects were students of Abia  State University but  explained  that they were mere suspects for now. He disclosed that other suspects were being trailed.

In disowning the incident, the  state government blamed the linking of the barbaric act to the university on political opponents who want to tarnish the image of the  administration. “It is the handiwork of political enemies and the figment of  imagination of some idle minds”, the state government said.
Governor Theodore Orji’s aides, Chief Eze Chikamnayo, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy and Mr. Ugochukwu Emezue, Special Adviser on Electronic Media, dismissed the video clips  as a “contraception of some idle people”, saying “it is so ridiculous that people believe this”.
At a briefing, yesterday, in Umuahia, jointly addressed by the Dean, Student Affairs of the university, Dr. Udo Nwokocha and the president of the Students Union Government, Comrade Christian Afulike, the university also distanced itself from the incident and persons involved in the act.
They said the university has conducted thorough investigations and discovered that “the purported incident never took place anywhere in Abia  State University nor were the rapists or victim students of the university, as alleged in mischievous publications”.
