A 10-year-old Waihopai School pupil [New Zealand] was caught with cannabis at school.
Principal Allan Mitchell said the pupil had a miniscule quantity of the drug with him on Tuesday and had "certainly breached the school's expectations and beliefs".
It was an issue that the school took seriously.
Mitchell said he referred the matter to police, and a police education officer spoke to all year 6 pupils about the dangers of the drug and being in possession of it.
Mitchell said he had been involved in education for 22 years and this was the first time he had had to deal with something like this.
He suspected the pupil took the cannabis to school as "a bit of bravado" and did not intend to use it.
He believed the incident was a one-off.
Mitchell had spoken to Waihopai School pupils and had written to their parents, he said, as the school was trying to be as transparent as it could be with the community.
