NDLEA confuse over Baba Suwe
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) appears to be at the crossroads over ace actor, Babatunde Omidina a.k.a Baba Suwe who has spent eight days in custody on the suspicion that his stomach is laden with hard drugs.
However, the agency still expressed the hope that the popular comedian could still excrete the drugs he was suspected to have ingested.
While family members and fans of Baba Suwe were agitated over his long detention, NDLEA spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju who spoke with Daily Sun on phone, said the actor was cooperating with the anti-narcotic officials, adding that due process was being followed in dealing with the matter.
“We don’t want to be talking about his toilet matters again on the pages of newspaper. We’re doing our job and we’re following due process. The only thing I can tell you is that Baba Suwe is still in our custody and would remain under observation till investigation is completed,” he said.
The actor was said to have done a third excretion within a week on Tuesday with no traces of hard drugs.
However, a top aviation source said the travails of Baba Suwe were not knew as there had been some “stubborn” drug couriers who excreted hard drugs in their fifth or sixth excretions.
“There’s nothing strange NDLEA is doing to the actor. We’re aware he is an actor/comedian whose fans have begun to worry about his welfare. If NDLEA insists it has sufficient evidence to hold him for possible drug ingestion, then we must let them do their job. Some people have stayed there for over two weeks which is when they completed their excretion,” the source said.
Baba Suwe made the first excretion last Friday evening but no drug has been found till date.
The actor who was to board an Air France flight to Paris at about 10pm on Wednesday October 12, 2011 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos allegedly tested positive to drug ingestion and was placed under observation.
NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar who confirmed that Mr. Omidina Babatunde was in safe custody added that the process of placing suspected persons under observation was the agency’s usual practice.
According to Hamza, “there is reasonable ground for suspicion and the actor is currently under observation. He is fine and has gone for the first excretion but no drug had been found on him. We have in the past recovered drugs after the fourth excretion. It is just the normal process for all passengers. Meanwhile, the actor will still be under observation.
