12 hours rain in Lagos causes flood, traffic jam, stranded commuters and high fares


Heavy Rainfall in lagos yesterday causes flood, traffic jams and long waits at bus stops.Lagosians who for most of the day, had to contend with dark sky, Those who had left their homes earlier were able to get to their offices or shops before it started. Others were trapped in the ensuing traffic jams or stranded at the bus stops waiting for commuter vehicles for which they paid higher.

With the rain, residents of Ajegunle, Agiliti and Owode Onirin areas on Ketu-Ikorodu Road should begin to take more seriously, the warning from the Lagos State government that they should relocate.
Though it was not as severe as last year’s when residents were forced to seek shelter elsewhere, many homes in the areas concerned, particularly Owode- Onirin were flooded.
In areas as far apart as Lekki, Ikeja, Iju Agege and Orile- Iganmu, Ikotun Egbe, Mile Two among others, residents bemoaned the sour taste left in their mouths by the rain.
The flood along the Mile Two- Second Rainbow- Sanya stretch of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway led to serious traffic jam.
Passengers waited at major bus stops such as Mile Two, Cele, Oshodi, Ikeja Along, Egbeda for commercial buses, which were delayed in the traffic jam and flood.
The bus fare from Oshodi to Mile Two rose from N100 to N150; Oshodi to Egbeda, from N100 to N150 and Ikotun to Oshodi from N120 to N150.
The rain, which started early in the Okokomaiko and Ijanikin areas along along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, caused traffic congestion along Iyana-Iba and Barracks.
Business activities in markets along the route, such as Iyana-Oba and Volkswagen were slow to pick up. Even as late as noon, some market women were still struggling to get to their shops and stalls.
