The Universal Promotional Wrestling Federation (UPWF), organisers of the world championships, tagged a ‘Gathering of Champions,’ have announced that tickets will go on sale from today.
The first leg of the fight will take place at the Abuja National Stadium in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Sunday, August 14 with other bouts scheduled for the Eko Hotels and Suites and the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on August 19 and 20.
Organisers say tickets are of different categories and can be obtained at the Abuja National Stadium, and other locations in the Federal Capital Territory.
As a way of avoiding any mishap during the championships, wrestlers were yesterday in Lagos screened to ascertain their level of fitness.
Nigeria’s Osita Offor, also known as De Ultimate Commander, will defend his UPWF World Heavyweight title, which he took from America’s Shelton Benjamin, last year.
The championship will feature some of the best professional wrestlers from USA, Canada, Kingdom of Tonga and Nigeria.
Some of the foreign wrestlers expected for the championship include the legendary Powers of Pain (the combination of the Barbarian and the Warlord), Bobby Lashley, Sid Vicious, Shelton Benjamin, King Haku, Val Venis, MVP, and Kenny of the Spirit squad.
Those expected in Nigeria tomorrow are Dave Batista, Chavo Guerrero, Rick Fuller, Jeff Lewis, Demolition Axe, Jonny Boone, Slam Shady, Frank Sullivan, and the Masked Superstar.
The Nigerian wrestlers, including Jimmy Palm, the Executioner, Black Heritage, Solid Rock and Merciless Mercy, among others, were screened, the organisers said, to ensure that they are physically fit for the challenge.
Spokesman of the organisers, Tee Mac, said the screening was done to avoid a repeat of last year’s sad incident, where one of the wrestlers slumped and died after a bout in Lagos.
“This are the best wrestlers you can get anywhere in the world and we are determined to ensure they get the same condition they are used to in the western world.
“One of such arrangements is providing a world class venue like the Eko Hotels, National Stadium, Abuja and the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
“Aside that, we are also ensuring that all our wrestlers are physically ready for the championship. We cannot afford to present unfit wrestlers for the event because Nigeria’s reputation is at stake,” he said.
He added that top musician and comedians in Nigeria will be part of the event to add special flavour to it.
Those lined up include Nigga Raw, Aki and Paw, J. Martins, Don Sly, KC Presh,
Nkem Owoh, Dauda, Klint Da Drunk, Sunny Neji, Mamuzzi, Sound Sultan, Dontom Emmanuel, Ruggedman and African cultural dances.
